What We Do

A housing counselor is a specially trained professional who can help you evaluate your financial situation, review your options, apply for a loan modification, short sale or refinance, assist with foreclosure support, and make a plan to help you get back on track to financial stability. Unlike a broker, servicer, or representative of your mortgage loan company, a housing counselor offers independent advice, acting as your advocate. Housing counseling services are often provided at little or no cost to you.

Educated buyers are more likely to achieve their financial goals. The NHN provides counseling and education to help individuals know where to go for help and take other actions to improve their present and long-term financial well-being. The services incorporate the appropriate access to and understanding of financial products, services, and concepts families use daily.

The NCLR Homeownership Network Learning Alliance (NHNLA) is a national training and certification program that provides housing counselors and managers with the training and information they need to be effective in the housing industry. NHNLA courses are developed in collaboration with NCLR Homeownership Network (NHN) housing counseling agencies located throughout major U.S. cities and rural communities, with curriculum based on the streamlined delivery methods, strategies, and experience of the NHN and its participating agencies, managers, and counselors.

NHNLA courses are open to all housing counselor professionals—current and prospective—who are looking to advance their careers.
